Summary of the research “Effects of Resveratrol on Recovery from Acute Ischemic Stroke Among Patients Who Received Delayed Alteplase: A Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Randomized Clinical Trial Study” studied the effect of Resveratrol on recovery of patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke who received Alteplase (a blood clot-dissolving injection) later than the appropriate time (3–4.5 hours after symptom onset).
Educational format
Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial
60 patients who received Alteplase within 3–4.5 hours after disease onset were divided into 2 groups.
- Resveratrol group: 450 mg/day (150 mg 3 times a day) for 30 days.
- Placebo group (placebo group)
Follow-up was performed at hospital discharge and at 3 and 6 months after stroke.
Indicators used
▪︎ NIHSS (Neurological Symptom Severity)
▪︎ mRS (Modified Rankin Scale: disability level)
▪︎ Barthel Index (ability to perform daily activities)
Study results
1. Short-term neurological symptoms (NIHSS)
NIHSS scores improved in both groups over time, but Resveratrol was not significantly better than Placebo (P = 0.99).
2. Long-term recovery (3–6 months)
The group receiving Resveratrol had significantly better results, including:
• mRS score decreased more (disability decreased).
• Barthel Index scores increased more than (Help yourself better)
3. Safety
No major side effects were found from Resveratrol.
Mortality rates were no different from those in the Placebo group.
Mechanisms that researchers suspect are involved
● Resveratrol helps restore the brain after ischemia through several mechanisms, such as
● Reduce inflammation of nerve cells.
● Reduce damage from free radicals (Oxidative Stress).
● Protect Blood-Brain Barrier.
● Promotes repair and connection of nerve cells after a stroke.
Important conclusions: This research found that
> Taking Resveratrol 450 mg/day for 30 days after receiving Alteplase in patients with ischemic stroke. It does not improve neurological symptoms in the short term. But it improved lifestyle recovery and reduced disability over 3–6 months compared to placebo.
