Key hepatoprotective roles of mitochondria in liver regeneration

Abstract:

Surgical treatment for severe liver disease is possible because the liver has an innate ability to regenerate after the diseased portion is surgically removed. Many key events in the cell's regeneration process converge on the mitochondria. This indicates the important role of mitochondria in liver regeneration. Mitochondria help the regenerating liver meet its many metabolic demands by coordinating energy production to drive cell division and its important function in maintaining homeostasis. Mitochondria are also involved in terminating the regenerative process by causing apoptosis. Various studies It has been shown that a decrease in mitochondrial activity results in delayed liver regeneration. and liver failure after surgery is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Emerging mitochondrial therapy strategies (e.g., mitotherapy) involve isolating mitochondria from healthy donors for transplantation into diseased organs to promote regeneration. This review highlights the important role of mitochondria in liver regeneration.
