Resveratrol is extracted from mulberries. It is a natural polyphenol that has many pharmacological effects. Especially the role in Prevent and slow down the progression of chronic kidney disease (Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), which has as many as 11 million patients in Thailand, according to information from the Ministry of Public Health.
Biological mechanism of action of resveratrol in the management of chronic kidney disease.
1. Antioxidant Activity
CKD has roots in “oxidative stress” that damages kidney cells
Resveratrol increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, Catalase, GPx.
Reduce the occurrence of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) in kidney tissue.
⇒ Prevents damage to glomerulus cells and kidney tubules.
2. Reduce chronic inflammation (Anti-inflammatory Effect)
CKD involves chronic low-grade inflammation.
Resveratrol reduces the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, NF-κB.
Inhibits macrophage activity and TGF-β1 activation that leads to kidney fibrosis (fibrosis).
⇒ Reduces inflammation and the accumulation of fibrosis in the kidney tissue.
3. Stimulates SIRT1 and AMPK
Resveratrol is an activator of SIRT1 (sirtuin 1), which plays an important role in protecting cells from stress.
SIRT1 reduces apoptosis of kidney cells and stimulates the process of autophagy (removal of waste cells).
It also stimulates AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), which has a beneficial effect on energy metabolism in kidney cells.
⇒ Extends the lifespan of kidney cells and slows down their deterioration.
4. Reduce kidney fibrosis. (Anti-fibrotic Effect)
CKD often progresses to renal fibrosis.
Resveratrol inhibits the TGF-β1/Smad pathway that stimulates kidney cells to form excessive fibrosis.
⇒ Helps slow down the progression of kidney disease to a severe stage.
5. Balancing Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS)
The RAS system controls pressure in the kidneys. But if it doesn't work properly, it will stimulate inflammation and fibrosis.
Resveratrol has the effect of reducing the activity of Angiotensin II and reducing the pressure in the renal capillaries.
⇒ Reduces damage to the glomerular filtering unit (glomeruli).
Summary of the benefits of resveratrol extracted from mulberry on chronic kidney disease.
Antioxidants Reduce oxidative stress in kidney cells anti-inflammatory Reduces chronic inflammation in the kidneys, stimulates SIRT1/AMPK, protects and repairs kidney cells.
Inhibits TGF-β1, reduces kidney fibrosis, balances RAS, reduces kidney pressure, and prevents glomerular damage.
