Resveratrol: Why is it a potential therapy for patients with chronic kidney disease?
Abstract: Resveratrol is a phenolic compound found in some plants, such as from grapes. Berries and peanuts have shown potential in treating cancer, slowing aging, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Resveratrol can increase stimulation. factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2) to increase the activity of SIRT-1, a sirtuin protein, and reduce mTOR signaling. This compound has anti-inflammatory properties. It inhibits or neutralizes nuclear particle κB (NF-κB), a redox transcription factor that is sensitive to inflammation and oxidative stress, a common feature in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is related to cardiovascular disease and CKD disease progression. Thus, by modulating the mechanisms involved in the oxidative stress cycle, resveratrol could play an important role in regulating the metabolism involved in CKD. Although dietary supplementation with resveratrol is theoretically a promising treatment in patient groups, studies evaluating its effects have not been performed. Therefore, the aim of this review is to describe the role of resveratrol in preventing inflammation and modulating antioxidant activity and its beneficial effects in patients with CKD.
