The effects of resveratrol on cognition, cerebral blood flow, gastrointestinal microbiota and systemic inflammation in healthy weight, overweight and obese adults

Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, University of Northumbria, United Kingdom.

Abstract: Resveratrol is a stilbene polyphenol with many health-promoting interactions. and mechanisms that affect cognitive performance However, existing research indicates that resveratrol supplementation does not affect cognitive performance in healthy young people. It even has the ability to modulate cerebral blood flow. Recent work has shown that resveratrol supplementation is more beneficial in individuals with age-related degenerative diseases. or those who are overweight Obese people in particular have many health problems, including chronic inflammation. and higher levels of cholesterol Excessive fat accumulation and inflammation of the nervous system Here, resveratrol offers a treatment option. Moreover, recent shifts in literature focus indicate the importance of gut microbiota composition to people's health. And specifically, this can be addressed through dietary intervention. Obesity is associated with dysbiosis of the microbiota, disruption of the intestinal barrier and an aggravated inflammatory response; It is hypothesized that polyphenol intervention may have the ability to modulate microbial composition and exert health-promoting effects. With such health-promoting effects of polyphenol-intestinal-modulation It may extend to cognitive functioning. through the brain-gut axis Therefore, both trials were randomized. Placebo-controlled and double-blind.

Included in this thesis is the objective of studying the effects of resveratrol supplementation on

cognitive function Cerebral blood flow, inflammation, and gut microbiota in healthy adults with different weight statuses.

The key findings here indicate that resveratrol supplementation, as in healthy young adults and adults, results in marked CBF modulation in healthy overweight and obese adults. It is also confirmed within this population. Resveratrol cannot exert its cognitive-enhancing effects. There is limited evidence of observable adverse effects. Changes in microbial composition were limited. This indicates that this may be a promising avenue for investigating resveratrol.
