Resveratrol for cancer prevention: current gaps and opportunities
Resveratrol for Cancer Prevention: Current Gaps and Opportunities
The incidence of cancer is increasing worldwide. coupled with the rapid increase in treatment costs This creates an unsustainable situation for the health care system. Going forward, it is clear that greater emphasis must be placed on defense strategies. Implementation of effective preventive treatments can have a significant impact on cancer incidence and mortality. Resveratrol (trans-3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene), a component of grapes, peanuts, and berries. It has received great interest as a potential cancer prevention agent. Hundreds of preclinical studies have proven protective activity in a variety of in vitro and in vivo models in a wide range of cancers. The pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and safety of resveratrol in humans are now well established through studies. But to date there have been clinical trials attempting to evaluate the impact on cancer-related endpoints. This review explains how resveratrol meets the needs of cancer prevention therapy. and highlight gaps that still need to be addressed as part of development. We focused on cancers for which there are already clinical trials or for which there is substantial evidence supporting the trial design, including melanoma. Colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer We also suggest a path from developing resveratrol to efficacy studies in high-risk populations. Colorectal cancer is notable for having sufficient data to support testing of resveratrol in cancer prevention trials.
